MSp 19 - Córdoba: 1st Muslim CAPITAL ("Mesquita") in Catholic Spain

In  the  middle  of  the
10th   Century
Córdoba
numbered  100,000
. .   ( smaller  than  our  city  of   Surprise! )  . .  

but  . .    3  times  larger  than   . .   Paris  . .  at  that  time !  

In  fact,    CÓRDOBA   was    Europe's   greatest   city . . .

( one  that  Rusty  and  Wrinkles  have  overlooked  and  ignored  . .  until  now ).

It's   importance    rivaled    Constantinople   and   Baghdad

Rusty  and  Wrinkles  are  in  for  a  big  eye - opener !!

Starting  with  the   train  ride   from  . .  Granada  to  . .  Córdoba 

we  were  impressed  with  miles  and  miles  of  . .   OLIVE   orchards 

. .   and     ( like  the  region  surrounding   FEZ,   Morocco )  

fertile  farm  land  . .  with  a  climate  perfect  for  agriculture

We're  staying  at 

Hostal   Alcazar 

just  outside  the  old  city  wall  

( at   . .   Martyrs  Square )  

on  a  little  cobbled  lane  . .  known  for  its  prizewinning  patios  

( in  May  competition )  

. .   Everything  will  be  within  a  short  walk   

Wheeling  our  bags  here  from  the  train  station  was  an 

enjoyable  stroll  through  a  long,  very  pretty  park

Our  first  glimpse  of  the  massive  structure 

called  the   

M E S Q U I T A 

built      ( 400  feet    x    600  feet )     by

 invading  . .   Muslims   . . 

➤   their  Headquarters  . .   that     ➤  ' preceded '  . .  the  Alhambra   . .  in  Granada

We  get  our    TICKETS    in  what   still  today   is  the  enclosed . .  Citrus  Grove 

where  Muslims  performed  their   . .   Ritual  "Cleansing"  . . 

before  "entering"  . .  the mosque  . .  for  prayer  . .

 Bell Tower
 used  today  by  the  . .   Christian  Church  . .
during  the   500  year  occupation   was  the  Minaret
used  by  the   Muezzin   to  call  all  Muslims  within  ear  shot
to  face  Mecca  and  . .   pray   . .
( his  donkey  took  him  most  of  the  way  to  the  top ! )

This  is  not  candy  cane  lane   . . 

It's  one  tiny  sliver  of  the    interior    of  the   MESQUITA 

▷    . .    ( Cordoba's   UNESCO   World  Heritage  site ) 

. .   In  Medieval  times  it  was  the  central  mosque 

of    'Al  Andaluce' 

the  southern  region  of  what   now   is   "Spain"  . . 

but   at  that  time  was  an . .   'independent  kingdom' 

The  Muslim  'spin'  on  this  period  of  history  emphasizes 

the   'tolerance'  all  groups  had  for  each  other  . . 

but 

it  was  clear  to  everyone

 'Muslims   ruled!'

No    Church  Spire    could  be   higher   than  a    Minaret   . . 

and  . .   even  though  the  call  to  prayer  rang  out  five  times  a  day,  

Church  Bells   . .   were    not  allowed    to be  heard

Christians  &  Jews  . .   paid  a   TAX   for  "permission"   to   practice   their   faith 

The    Mihrab

USED  . . "then" . .  still   . .   remains    UN - touched   to  "this  day" 

. .    the    Niche    where  the   ' Imam '   ( prayer  leader )    faces   Mecca 

in  this  small  room  

( with  his   back  to   the  assembled  crowd  . . .  his   voice   amplified  by  the  architecture )

There  is  no  place  you  can  stand  to  get  it   ALL   into   ONE   photo.   

Even  a  panorama  can't  begin  to  capture  the  size  of  the  interior  space   . .  

( much  of  it  is  quite  dark )

More  than
   800    red  and  blue    Columns 
. . .    and  imagine    . . .  

a  dirt  floor
. .   a  spread  of  hundreds  of  carpets  . . 

up  to   20,000   males   . .   bottoms  up   . .   facing  the  mihrab
rocking  forward 

touching  their  heads  to the ground
praying  'Allah Akbar  . . .  no  other  but  Allah' . . .

. .     After    500  years    ( imagine      5 0 0    years  !!! ) 

. . .   it's   OVER ! 

 . .   the   invaders  are    finally     ➤   driven  out  . .  

☞   allowed  to   LIVE  . .     so  long  as  they   . .  ☞  LEFT

Most  went  to   . . "Granada"    . .   ( the  neighboring  'kingdom' )

which   endured      "a n o t h e r"    . . .     250  years

The  Mosque  is   . .    30  feet  high 

. .   the   Cathedral    ( in  the  center  of  the  mosque )   is   . .   130  feet  high !

Arab   Architects

  were  hired  to  incorporate

 some  of  the    same   ARCHED   features     of  the  mosque 

. .    into  the  church  itself   . .

Years   later
 Medieval    CHOIR    Area
   was  added  . .  taking  up  a  chunk  of  space   in   the   NAVE   of   the   Sanctuary

The    CHURCH   itself   is   . .   very  . .   Bright   and   uplifting   . .
The  Baroque   CHOIR   area  is  . .  very  . .   Dark  ( New World  'mahogany' )  . .  full of  "symbolism"
