MSp 11 - Merzouga: Saharan Desert, Camel Rides & Treks

This  is  great !
I  was  really  hoping  we'd  get  to  ride  camels  again.

Merzouga  . .  is  the   end  of   the  line  for  transportation . . .
approximately   30  miles   from  the  Algerian  border
( a  forbidden  territory )
Several  resort  accommodation  Hosts  arrive  to  meet  guests  at  the  bus  station
A  little  shop  sells  water  and  bare  bones  necessities.
And  then  away  we  go  with  pounding  hearts  wondering  what's  in  store  for  us.

This  is  . .   our   . .   Hotel  Kasbah  Kanz  Erremal  . .
( owned  by  . .   2  Spanish  couples,   and   1  Moroccan )

Part  of  our  living  area  -  really  fun  decor.
3  Rooms   .   windows  looking  onto  .  the  Sahara  .  the  Camels  .  full  Moon   and   Berber  tents

We're  on  the  upper level.        I  could  live  here  forever   . .
" if "  . .   I  could  move  this  building  to  Arizona !

One  of  many  sitting  areas   . .

Rooms  on  upper  level.
Breakfast  Buffet  sometimes  on  lower  level  . .   when  not  served  outside

A   Sandstorm   in  the  afternoon   gives  us  a  good  excuse  to  cover  our  heads   . .
( NOW   . .   do  we  look  like  we   "fit  in"   . .   ??! )

"Dunja"   ( like  'dune'  ya )   from  Munich,  Germany  arrives  by  bus  in  Merzouga  with  us
and  we  do  many  things  together.
Her  traveling  companion  was  scared  to  come  . .  so  she  is  alone.
Rusty  and  Wrinkles  are  on  camels  2  and  3.
This  is  to  be   a  . .   Sunset  Trek

Our  Kasbah  Hotel   . .   in  the  background   . .
we're   headed  into  the  enormous  Saharan  sandbox   . .   one  of  the  world's  biggest   . .

Our  guide  . .  is  helpful  and  fun  . .  a  Berber  . .  speaks  English  better  than  most

When  it  gets  too  steep  for  the  camels  to  climb  . .  he  has  us  . .  get  off
. .   and  start  trekking   . .  on  foot

We  learn  how   hard   it  is  to   climb   on  . .   shifting  .   drifting   .   sand

He's   determined   we  . .   WILL   . .  make  it   . .   to  the  top !

And  thanks  to  his  steady  hold  . .   he  is  right  . .   and  we  have  the  photo  to  prove  it
. .    360  degree  view  of   Saharan  Desert    . .

At  the  top    . .    we  wait  for   . .    Sunset  . .

Another  guide  brings  a  couple  who  are  on  their  honeymoon  . .

We've  gone  from   the   Sonoran   Desert   . .   of  the  . .   U.S.   Southwest   . .
to    the   Saharan   Desert   . .   of  the  . .   African  Northwest !

Headed  down  . .   and   looking  forward  to  . .  Berber  "tajine" . .   picnic  supper   on  the  patio

Second  night  of  the  full  moon  . .

A   toast   to  great  memories  . .   Our    eastern - most  point     in  Morocco  . .

Signing   off   as   . .   Rusty  .  Wrinkled  .   sandy  .   and  .  'dry - as - a - bone' !
( sampling  Moroccan  'vino' )
