MSp 15 - Rock of Gibraltar & La Linea de Concepcion

We'll  stay  in   . .   La  Linea 

( the Spanish  town:   the  "line  of "  conception  . . 

or  beginning  of  -  dividing  British  Gibraltar  from  Spain )   

The Brits  took  " The   Rock   "  from  Spain  by  force  in 1704 

and  even  though  Spain  and  France  together  made  several  attempts  to  get  it  back 

the  Brits  still  have  it  . .  and  the  resentments  continue  to  this  day

The  vantage  point  from     " The  Rock "      obviously  gives  a  perfect  point 

to  keep  an  eye  on  the  Strait 

that  separates  the  . .   Atlantic  Ocean  from  the  . .   Mediterranean  Sea 

as  well  as  separating  . .   Europe  from  . .   Africa  

Its  background  had  military  emphasis  . .  but  in  the  recent  20  years

  TOURISM   . .   is  transforming   it's   appearance  and  purpose

Crossing  the  Border,   showing  Passports,   we enter  British  zone 

and  start  heading  onto   . . 

the     only   airstrip   in  the  world    that   

allows  vehicles  and  pedestrians  to  cross 

Ordinarily  you  change  your  watch  . .  one  hour  . .   here 

 ( but )   Britain  is  still  on  daylight  saving  time.  

EUROS  . .  can  be  used  ( but )   . .   the   exchange  rate   will  take  a  big  bite.  

We  decide  to  use  Visa  for  Cable Car   one  way,   walk  down, 

and  eat  when  we  get  back  to  the  Spanish  side.

( today  a  food court / lowbrow  food circus ) 

we  decide  we'd  better  have  some  energy  food  before  this  long  day.   

It's   a    former  . .   Barracks  and  Ammunitions Storage   . .   spot  

And  after  a   500  year   Moroccan  absence, 

they  were  invited  to  live  in  these  barracks    ( converted  into  apartments ) 

. .   as  'replacement'  workers  

because  Spain's  leader  . .  Franco  . .  had  recently  sealed  the  Border   ( 1969 )  

no  longer  allowing  Spanish  citizens  to  commute  back  and  forth.

We  share  a   . .   shrimp - stuffed  . .   Baked  Potato

Main Street
  ( between  . .  Casemates  Square  and  the  . .  Cable Car ) 

has  become  pedestrian  only   . .  lined  with  . .   shopping  and  eating  temptations
    

Up  we  go  . .    8.5   British  pounds   .   one - way   .   per - person

It's  always  fun  to  . .   return  to    . .  a  place  you've  been  before.   

The   1400  foot  high    ROCK    is  still  here  and  still  the  same   ( nearly  a  mile  long ) 

. .   even  though  other  things  have  changed   . . 

new  Shopping  Centers   .   lots  of  View Points

Somewhere  we  have  a  pic . .  just  about  like  this  -  ( our  "KIDS" have  AGED  👍🏼   since  then )

Barbary  Apes    ( Macaques )   . .    about  200  live  on  the  Rock.   

What's  'yours'  is  'theirs'  . .   so  advice  is   "Do  Not  Feed" 

But  they  have  found  what  remains  of  someone's  juice  and  are  going  after  it 

with  tongues  .  hands  .  rolling  in  it  .  "good  to  the  last  drop"  . .  

and  then  mom  has  the  task  of  licking  all  the 'sticky'  from  her  babe's  hair

Legend  says  as  long  as  the  Apes  are  here,   so  will  be  the  Brits !   

( Guides  say  . .  Apes . .  can  touch  'you' . .  but  you . .  endanger  yourself   by  touching  . .   'them' )

   

The  enclosed  area  provides  shelter  on  windy  days.     Huge  windows  are  nice. 

Sandwiches   .   Beverages    .    Souvenirs   . . .  are  ready  and  waiting

After  a   long  lingering  look  up  here   . .   wishing  the  haze  would  lift  . . 

so  we  could  see  Morocco  . .   across  the  Strait   and   . .   even  the  Rif  Mts   . . 

we  begin  to  head  . .   DOWN   . .  this   Rock

 are  referred  to  as  the 

 ☞     2  Pillars  of   . .  'Hercules' . . 

( as story goes  ..  the  Herculean  muscle  that  pushed  apart  Africa  and  Europe )

Join  us  on  the  descent !      It's  going  to  take  at  least  a  couple  hours   . . 

depending  on  how  many  wrong  choices  we  make  at  each  fork  in  the  road.

In  Greek  legend  . .   these     CAVES    ( St. Michael's )   were  believed  to  be   . . 

the   Gates  to  "Hades"  . .   (or)  . .   the  entrance  to  a   "secret"  tunnel   to . .  Africa

The  afternoon  Sun  is  going  down  with  us   . .

The  Grade  varies  . .  from  stretch  to  stretch

Cable Car
is  about   mid  point   on  the   2. 5  mile long   town  length

A  few  hours  ago  we  were  inside  one  of  those   . .

It  will  be  dark  before  we  get  to  the  bottom   . .

A  zoomed  view . .   Follow  the  wide  street  crossing  the  Airstrip  up  to  the  top,  

thru  the  covered  low  building  with  white  roof  . .   and  then  

opening  up  into  the  circle  called   . .    Constitution  Square.   

Like  spokes,   streets  go  off  in  all  directions.  

Our  Hostal Campana   is  to  the  left   . .   ( only  2  doors  down )  

and  is  . .  within  1 block  of  the  Bus Station  . .    

Very  handy  for  staying  over  there   . .   and  walking  back  across  to  . .   the  Rock !

When  we  spot  these  Arches  we  know  we've  "conquered"  The  Rock  . .  We're  down !

Looking  back   . .   the   Remains  of  another era   . .   are  now   lit up

We  slept  like   'a  rock'   and  next  a.m.  we  move  on

  by   bus   to   a  beach  town   called   . .   Nerja   ( Nair - huh )

It  means   backing  up  slightly   to  Algeciras, 

re - ticketing  to  Malaga   . .   and  then 

another  ticket  for  the  bus  to  Granada   . .   that  will  "stop"  in  Nerja  . .  Why?

( to  get  to  Nerja  in  "mid  afternoon"  . .   instead  of  waiting  for  the  'direct'  evening  bus)
