On SATURDAY . . Oct. 11 . . the checkout desk says . . Supratour bus is . . full
. . ( because it's . . 'Sunday' )
. . Are WE confused or are THEY ?? . .
It is to be an . . overnight bus
And . . supposably . . the less comfortable CTM bus, also overnight . . is . . full
" So . . . you stay more night or two, no ?? " they say.
And . . supposably . . the less comfortable CTM bus, also overnight . . is . . full
" So . . . you stay more night or two, no ?? " they say.
Fun as this is . . we decide to bite the bullet and use the . . Grand Taxi
( which will come right to this resort - hotel )
_____
On this morning of our departure . . from the Saharan sands . .
we find a nice Buffet . . using the
typical Tajine cooking dish with . . stove pipe lid
typical Tajine cooking dish with . . stove pipe lid
to make scrambled eggs . . directly over the fire . .
Our Grand Taxi
meaning . . "longer distances" / between towns . .
( as opposed to Petit Taxis used within towns / short distances ).
'Grand' they are not. They're all Mercedes Benz . . on their last legs,
probably privately owned and what makes them 'official' is the rack on top
with the sign ( absent on this one ).
We go with this chatterbox as far as Er Rachidia ( approximately 1. 5 hrs. )
Then he scrounges around to find another driver willing to drive all the way to Meknes.
That one stops by his 'apartment', quickly gathers a few things in his overnight bag,
has his daughters come to greet these strangers and
. . with them comes a plate full of cookies.
A short distance out of town he picks up a lady ( 'family', he says ) standing at a bus stop.
Might be wife, sister . . a companion to help him watch the road and talk to
. . since we and he can only mime / charade motions together
and it will be six or more hours heading north . .
over several smaller 'tizis' . . ( remember that PASS word ?! )
About 9 p.m. we pull up to this . . Hotel Majestic . .
Like India, the names are 'way - over - the - top' . .
( Put yourself in the right mood / attitude . . and this fact can be quite humorous !
TIP : always ' UNDER - expect ' . . and you often have a nice surprise . . on the ' plus ' side )
Hotel Majestic . . is one of those surprises . .
probably older than the U.S. of A. but . . well tended to . .
has all the necessities . .
a very atmospheric breakfast area . . with well - trained friendly staff . .
and perfectly located . . one block from the train station . . .
( for next segment of our journey )
. . in the Ville Nouvelle part of town laid out slightly more grid - system - like,
rather than the medina / oldest part . .
following alleyways that meander . .
where the long - ago . . '4 - footers' wandered . . ( I'm not kidding ! )
Most cities have . . the 'Ancient' Medina and the 'New' Part of town
( and a . . 3rd section distinguished as . . 'Mellah' / Jewish )
The 'New' is never younger than 700 years . .
( Do the math ! . . An example of " mind - set " and " attitude - adjustment "! )
Here we are headed down along the new town palm - lined boulevard
toward the valley that separates old and new.
Usually the top sites are in the . . old ( Medina ).
And so far the Medinas have dominated the awards for . . UNESCO World Heritage status
From the valley below . . we head UP . . into the narrow lane leading to . .
' The Medina '
( the entire old section of the city . . always with a public square of major significance )
As the day wears on . . the streets and sidewalks fill to squeeze - by capacity
Meknes
became the . . .
1st . . . Imperial . . . City
( 10th thru . . 17th Century )
. . The one - time home of the MOROCCAN sultan, Moulay ar - Rashid
and later
the brother Moulay Ismail who succeeded him
reigning 55 years . .
credited as
' Founder of ' modern Morocco . . and of the earliest Dynasty
Good breeding and ruthlessness
are the
"qualities" revered
for this title.
All who refused . . to submit . . to being ruled . . were slaughtered
. . including 83 brothers and half brothers.
Considering himself a "lover" . . he fathered . . hundreds of children !
He liberated Tangier . . from the . . British . .
took back most of the territory the Spanish had seized . .
put the Berber tribes under his thumb . .
and with the . . tax money . . he demanded from the successful
he kicked off a . . gigantic building campaign
. . ( 'Babs' / Gates . Walls . Gardens . Palaces and grand boulevards ) . . were underway
Moroccans began to see their 'future' ahead.
However . . with the death of Ismail . . the dynasty crumbled
. . and Morocco's last great "golden age" was . . 'through - the - looking - glass'
One clue you are near a UNESCO & / or Imperial top site is the
. . abundance of carriages
. . So far we have not ridden one, but the 'clip clop' sound adds a lot to the atmosphere
Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail:
Because of his stature in their history as "one of the greatest rulers" . .
non - Muslims are welcome inside . . . they cannot approach the tomb
( neither could anyone else, it appeared )
( Inside the Mausoleum ): He's back there somewhere . . People are P R O U D
( Taken by a German couple who travel like we do ) . .
I'll remember him because he marks up his books like I do
when planning a trip . . ( or 'Boot Camp' Adventure, as we call it )
His wife says . . "He's my travel guide !"
( . . Must be barefoot or stocking footed in these places . . )
We day - trip to
Volubilis ( a Roman ruin )
Volubilis ( a Roman ruin )
. . A half hour Grand Taxi ride from Meknes thru this bread basket area . .
Olive orchards . Citrus . Almonds . Tomatoes . Pomegranates . Grains
. Corn . Cucumbers . Sheep . . on the hillsides
. Corn . Cucumbers . Sheep . . on the hillsides
A UNESCO World Heritage Site
less than 50% excavated
Best preserved archeological site in Morocco
Volubilis was originally settled by traders from Carthage
( Tunisia - north coast of Africa - south of Sicily )
3rd Century B. C.
300 years later, Rome annexed it into the Roman Empire
making it . . one of its most 'remote' outposts
From Volubilis . .
the white hilltop town of . . "Moulay Idriss" . . is
uniquely bright . . and an upside - down . . cone - shaped eye - catcher . .
Few cars . lots of donkeys
one of the country's most important "pilgrimage" sites . .
Named for . . "Moulay Idriss",
great grandson of the
prophet
Mohammed
. . an 'escapee' . . from Mecca ( 8th Century )
running from "caliphate" . . being imposed upon . . Saudi Arabia . . ( by Iraq ) !
He fled to Volubilis ( Morocco ) . made friends . converted many to his Muslim faith
Thus the . . .
beginnings . . of . . Islam . . in . . Morocco
"Moulay Idriss" was eventually ( about 6 yrs. later ) tracked down and murdered
Non - Muslims cannot enter his mausoleum,
but in recent years
they have been peacefully allowed to lodge in this village over night
Residents of this little town are eager to point out that they have
the country's . . only 'round' MINARET . .
We climb oodles of steps to reach terrace view points
Returning to the . . Imperial city of Meknes
we climb a few more steps to have
a meal overlooking another UNESCO World Heritage Medina . . including
Bab (Gate) el - Mansour
These important gateways evidently are opened only on the most important events of the year
. . A smaller side gate gets the daily use
The UNESCO honor also includes this public square called
Place el - Hedim
Place el - Hedim
used by the revered sultan "Moulay Ismail"
to make
royal " announcements "
to make
royal " announcements "
and to hold
public . . . executions !!
public . . . executions !!
( DO YOU SEE A PATTERN DEVELOPING HERE . . EXTENDING . . to TODAY ??? )
To their credit
today's Moroccans are questioning the value of
honoring . . embarrassing history
today's Moroccans are questioning the value of
honoring . . embarrassing history
We've begun a pattern of our own
. . looking for high places
. . looking for high places
to people - watch while we eat supper and wait for sunset.
It's cooler here in the north.
The humidity is between 50 and 80,
a noticeable increase after being in the desert where humidity was 19.
There are occasional showers.
One sample menu . . rarely is English provided.
We do a lot of guessing.
We do a lot of guessing.
And it's amazing how much conversation 2 people can have
when neither has a clue what the other person is really saying. Somehow it all works out.
And even ends up in hearty smiles and pats on the shoulder.
Moroccans use lots of Eggs . . and always . . Bread and Olives
Breakfast always includes Orange Juice . Yogurt . Bread . Jam sometimes Cheese
'Olive oil' . . goes on the bread . . It's growing on us.
This meal includes String Beans . Rice and a rich Hot Sauce that's quite nice
This terrace has 2 tiers.
Most people eat late ( 8, 9, 10:00 ) . . so we have great choice of seats.
As the night wears on the music volume rises,
the activity in the square seeks to match the fame of Djemaa el - Fna in Marrakesh . .
By then . . we are in our room . . focused on topics for . . tomorrow
Next time . . from Meknes . . to Fez . . Another important Imperial city and UNESCO site.
Rusty and Wrinkles need to slow the pace and take a break
. . Hugs . . from Morocco !
