You can't appreciate Tangier today without a peek into its' past . .
( We'll keep it simple )
Imagine . . our own country being . . invaded and . . 'ruled by '
the ones who have dictated to . . Moroccans :
Greeks & Phoenicians . . . the ones who also brought the Jallaba - ( long hooded ROBE )
and called Tangier 'Tinge' . . . ( Hercules' LOVER )
Romans . . . . . . . . used Tangier as an outpost 'Province' . . called it 'Tingitana'
Byzantines & Arabs . . .
Portuguese . . . . . . .
Spain & France . . . . . divided & controlled Morocco . . except for . . TANGIER
( From 1912 to . . 1956 = Moroccan 'INDEPENDENCE' )
TANGIER
. . . was divided into several sectors after World War II ( like East & West . . Berlin )
. . . FRANCE SPAIN BRITAIN
PORTUGAL HOLLAND SWEDEN ( all 9 had a piece of the pie ! )
BELGIUM ITALY USA
. . . this was the famous . . " International Zone " period in history
. . . Taxes . . could NOT be collected - "No One" was . . 'in charge'
. . . CHAOS REIGNED . . attracting world's worst / most bizarre ( reasons high / low )
. . . Spies . Hippies . Eccentrics . Currency Speculators . Exiles . Hustlers
. Socialites . Artists . Drug Addicts . Sexual Deviants
. Sleaze of every sort
A New Monarch . . in 1999 . . who had studied in Europe
. . . With forward thinking ideas about . . . COMMERCE & TOURISM
. . . Helped the community realize it's 'potential' and . . .
. . . Embraced it's huge strategic importance at the Entrance to the Mediterranean
. . . Recognized it's introductory Location as the . . 'Gateway' to . . Africa
. . . Enormous new Port being built, new business district, Airport & Train Station
. . . Buildings are being renovated . Beaches cleaned up . Rif - Raf driven out
. . . Garbage is being picked up . Waste Bins installed
. . . Cultural activities popping up . nice places to stay & eat being expanded
. . . Throughout Morocco massive road building and construction is evident
. . . People seem hopeful and lifted up . . . pressing for action, tired of talk
. . . They have Internet ('Wee - Fee', they call it ), Cell Phones, etc.
. . . They are learning what's 'out there' . . . & want to be part of it
. . . McDonald's . Burger King . Pizza Hut . Starbucks etc, all packed with 'locals'
So a new day is dawning . . not perfect . . a long way to go
Dealing with threats of . . Terrorism
. . . ( 2 explosions since our 9 / 11, both in Casablanca . .
instigated by . . non - Moroccans )
_____
We use a Petit Taxi . . from new train station . . to the major square
'Place de France'
and
walk to our 1st choice hotel from there ( 2 blks )
Pension Hollanda
Then venture down ( 1 more block ) to the view - point
Terrasse des Paresseux
and sure enough . . we can
"see" across the Strait
to the European Continent and the southern shores of Spain !
_______________
We have a major sense of accomplishment looking back at the miles we've covered
since Arrival in Casablanca September 29 !
( It reminds us of how we felt when we reached India's southern tip . .
Sort of a . . "Wow, we've done it !" )
We discover we are right below La Giralda ( highlighted in our book )
Up we go to enjoy
not only a wall of windows to the Strait but a fancy setting . .
with 'ordinaries' like ourselves already seated and arriving with us . .
Simple Prices . Great everything . Definitely on the "Recommended" List !
We do lots of walking, as usual
In
Mendoubia Gardens
this historic Monument contains the
Speech
given by . . Mohammed V
making the case for
. . "I N D E P E N D E N C E " . .
( from . . France )
shedding a lot of light on why
every Moroccan city and town has a "main drag" . . named after . . HIM
( like India . . where
every place has an M.G. major thoroughfare
honoring . . Mahatma Gandhi's . . contribution
to gaining . . their . . treasured . . "INDEPENDENCE" )
Tangier has miles of waterfront property
and vast amounts of it are under seriously important renovation and classy new construction.
We will use the "original" port
located right below the . . big square ( Grand Socco )
and "handy" to get to . . Tarifa, Spain
But the new stuff going in further east . . is going to get the world's attention
. . Including high end yachtsmen . giant cruise ships . moorage slips .
new ferry docks and terminal
and probably a shopping center . . as they are doing in other port cities . .
together with condos and apartment suites. It's a BIG deal !
We go on a . . historical treasure hunt of famous hotels and restaurants
from the rowdy days of the
International Zone period
. . of prostitutes . movie - making . Hollywood stars
( Rex Harrison . Rock Hudson . Rita Hayworth
Aristotle Onassis and Jackie Kennedy " O " etc pictured all over the place )
This is
El - Minzah Hotel
landmark 5 - Star hotel
with several restaurants and bars, including
Caid's
the pianist tinkling away
. Pools . Fitness Center . Spa . Babysitting Service .
We eaves - drop from this garden corner
watching French lawyers ( he & she kinds ) come and go
. . during 2 nights of their Convention
The Bar Tender has fun helping us snoop around . . He's humored by the sophisticates too
( In fact, 'he' is part of our fun . .
as is a lone Norwegian business man . . just trying to have a simple supper )
We decide to Day - Trip out to
C A P S P A R T E L
★ . . . Africa's farthest NorthWestern point . . .
and along the way note the exclusive royal palaces and villas
It's also the . .
mythical home of . . Hercules
( famous for . . Adventure and the . . ' Herculean effort ' . .
( the story goes )
to . . "separate" . . Europe . . from . . Africa . .
creating
. . the Strait of Gibraltar . . ! )
And guess what else we found ??
I had just said to a teen . . afraid to get on a camel . .
"They're probably safer than a horse, they don't gallop"
when all of a sudden the camel guide 'Abdullah' walloped the rear end . .
and off the camel 'Ali Babba' goes . . into the ocean !
The owner is hollaring "Oh My God ! Oh My God ! Oh My God !"
and we're freaking out wondering if this dromedary
is going to get dizzy from the moving water and lose its balance !?!?
( By the way, isn't it interesting which few foreign words a person first picks up ? )
Okay, this was un - necessary but we couldn't resist riding ( camel . . "Ali Babba" )
on the beach of the . . Atlantic Ocean !
And the ever present salesman is NOT asking for any 'dirham'
to wear the . . 'FEZ' hat . . just long enough for a photo
This guy . . ( owner, "Abdullah" )
is eager and proud to have his sons remembered in our pictures
Time to Hydrofoil across to Tarifa, Spain . . We'll lose an hour . .
We watch Tangier FADE into the DISTANCE as we move north
In 35 minutes . . .
we will . . CHANGE :
Continents . Clock time . Language . Food . Religion . Dress . Money
( globally manageable ) . . Macro - "Diversity"
Not a crowded time of year . . ( shoulder season ).
Tickets . . can be . . purchased . . "just before" boarding
Passports handled on board .. no hassle
We get out Rick Steve's SPAIN 2014 to refresh details
about using "boat ticket" to board "free transfer bus" to Algeciras . .
where we'll buy tickets to move on to Gibraltar . .
but we'll stay in La Linea . . ( across the airport landing strip )
on the "Spain" side of the line
where prices are much more reasonable
In between the stories of Morocco and Spain . .
we will be squeezing in at least one full day in the British territory at the Rock of Gibraltar
with a 3rd . Money . Language . Customs . Laws . and list of sites
We need to be on our toes !!
Still . . and as always, Rusty & Wrinkles
