Wandering around town . .
we pop into a little bakery ( very dark ).
This must be a 'hot' job.
He slides one bread in at a time using the long pole, flat at the oven end.
This is a common staple item found in most every meal,
stuffed with food or torn to use as utensils and to mop up liquids on the plate or bowl.
The deal is being made near Djemaa el - Fna . . the big square
chosen as a "Masterpiece of World Heritage" by UNESCO in 2001.
The feast is also today ( same day as slaughter ) and the eating of lamb goes on
until it is finished ( days following ) including in homes.
Three Berber teens near the Berber tanneries.
The male on the left ( previous pic ) takes us to the rooftop
so we can see down into the government - provided
"hovel" for nomadic Berbers
to crowd into overnight when they come into town
bringing . Sheep . Mint . Corn . Hides (for "leather")
2 stories - multiple people in each square box.
Oodles of cats around . . probably to minimize rats and mice.
Kitten here is having lunch!
Teen above laughingly says . . "This is our Berber " F e r r a r i " !!
More sheep arriving . .
Commotion outside our window (immediately left of this scene)
about 8:30 this morning must have been the arrival ( & throat - slitting )
of this sheep . . ( the 4th of 5 to be butchered, the girls tell us ).
Sweeping the blood into the waiting hole
here in an outer garage / parking area ( another inner courtyard, of sorts )
The girls, Safia ( correct spelling ) and Maria tell us
their mother is American Swedish and their father is Saudi Moroccan.
And they said they aren't going to eat this lamb, they would have something else.
Their brother said he likes lamb and will eat it.
And they pointed to various areas telling where each relative lives,
which porch was theirs - middle of 3 levels,
and that the grandmother
directly above this slaughter would have all the relatives at her apartment later today.
( About that time, a man - maybe their father - came over to say
we can't take pictures of 'children' and that we should delete their pics.)
We apologized . . We had asked first if we could take pictures . .
and they were right there watching the slaughter. The answer was 'yes'.
We went through the motions of deleting
and wondered if he would prove it to himself. He did not.
So we share their cute faces and will remember their enthusiastic chatter.
They have relatives in Michigan - about an hour west of Detroit.
This is our included breakfast each a.m.
In the courtyard beyond the check - in desk . .
Bread . Yogurt . Jam . Orange Juice and choice of Tea . Coffee . Hot Chocolate
Signing off as . . Rusty and Wrinkles
