MSp 13 - Imperial Fez & train to Tangier

Fez    began   with   almost 
 8,000    people  who   had   fled   southern   Spain
( following   the   final    "Spain  Vs.  Moors"   defeat   in   Granada   1492 )   

. .  Originally  Berber  people

( joined  by  Arabs  across  the  Mediterranean  north  coast  of  the  African  continent  . . )

. .  today  a    1200  yr  old  city    that  competes  mightily 

with  its'  sister  Imperial  counterpart,   Marrakesh.
  

Moulay  Idriss  I  and  II   . .   decided   Volubilis  . .  was  too  small 

so  chose    Fez    as  the   new  . .   Imperial   Capital.  

' Imperial '    seems  to  always  include  

grand  .  wide  .  dramatic  .   park - like  .   tree - lined  
Boulevard(s)   and    Fountain(s) 

leading . .  the  EYE   and . .  ' the  Ruled '  . .    toward  a  dramatic
BAB    ( Entry GATE )   into  the  kingdom 

. .   many  smaller  gates  surround  the  fortified  . .   Medina   . .   ( Old  City )

UNESCO  World  Heritage  site   . .      Fes  El  Bali     . .   the  Ancient  Medina 

. .    a  tangle  of  activity  in  meandering  alleyways  . . 

where   getting  lost   is  both  . .    guaranteed   . .   and   . .    fascinating

It's   at  least  10 - 15  degrees  cooler  in  this  north  central  area 

with  higher  Humidity  than  the  inland  desert  of  the  south.  

Weather   here  is  ideal  for  growing  most  of  what  the  population  depends  on  for  food 

. .  including   VINEYARDS    plump  with  grapes  . .   between  Fez  and  Meknes 

reaping  enough  to  fill  the  shelves  with  plenty  of  'Reds'  and  'Whites'  . . 

the  vino  product  they  claim  not  to drink
( or  . .  as  India  would  say,   "Not  in  public !" )

where  we   had  hoped  to  see  all  the   colors    in  the  vats   . . 

Not  there   . . .    too  close  to  holiday   . . .  and  recent  rain

LIME   Vats   . .   the  solution  that   removes  HAIR    ( 15  days )

  

AMONIA  ACID   Vats  . . that   separate   fat  &  grease   from  . .   SKINS  ( 15 days )

Pigeon  'POO'  .  Pigeon  'SHIT'  .  ( guilt - less  grin ) !   that  softens   LEATHER   ( 1 week )

     WET  WHEAT  FLOUR   Vats   . .   prepare   LEATHER   ( 1 week ) 

to accept    the  various    colors    of    dye

Slippers   . .   "Babouche"   as  they  call  this  pointed - toe   footwear  

worn  both   indoors   and   outdoors

  One  man  says  he  always  wears  them  when  he  goes   . .    to  prayers

Usually  donkeys  do  this  work   . .    Here  a  horse  is  piled  with  Hides    . .

A  mid - 1300  A. D.  mystery  (Marinid Dynasty)
used  by  the  Muezzin  to  call  Muslims  to  Prayer  5  times  a  day

A    Restaurant   called     'The  Clock'    has  built  a  business  around  the  name 

. .   ( Looking  down  from  about  level  3 )

Eating  levels  spin  off  as  you  climb  up  and  up.  

We  have  their  Specialty  . .  "CAMEL BURGER"  in  the  noon  position  at  the  top
. .   Sort   of   a   tree  house   experience !   

One  level  down  from  us  is  a   . .   Cooking Class

He's  opened  a  Bar.         If  it  doesn't   'GO'   he'll  return  to  Italy   

He  is  hungry  and  accepts  each  bite  of  food  we  offer  him  

Says  his  father  is  a   "What  you  call  it?  . . .  Hippie".      He  doesn't  know  him.

 Parks    . .    in  Fez  have  their  own  "look" 

some  palms,     more  evergreens 

and   lots  of  maples   with  falling  leaves   . . 

reminding  us  it  is    . .      Autumn 

We  leave  Fez  by  train   . .   head  north  . .   to  Tangier

( 1st  class   . .   a  couple  dollars  more   than  2nd,    guarantees  a  seat  

and   leaves  more  room   for  those  in   2nd  class )

About  a  half  hour  before  arriving  in  Tangier   . . 

we  find  our  rail - riding  selves  right  along  the   . .   Atlantic  Ocean 

Tangier   is  a  story  all  it's  own   . .   We've  covered  a  lot  of  territory   .   a  lot  of  history

Before  long  we'll  be   . .   changing  Continents . . .  

So  far  it's  been  an   adventuresome   intense   three  weeks.  

We  have  felt   safe   at  all  times.
