SA 03 - Jo'burg "Sterkfontein Caves"

              

Speaking  of  Researching  your  Family  Ancestry 

. . .   This  UNESCO  World  Heritage  Site   . . . 

is  one  of  the  granddaddys  in  the  study  of  Human  Existence 

Our  guide  emphasizes  that  it's   NOT   that  humans   "evolved  from "   APES 

but  that  they   SHARE  a   common   ' family   of   CHARACTERISTICS '   

Among  them  are  . .   the  CAPACITY   OF   THE 

BONES  that  cover  the  skull    .    DIET   .    UPRIGHT  POSTURE.                

                                   

  "Come On Down!"                                                                            

      

        

Jeff  has  never  been  in  a  cave  . . 

and  is  very  apprehensive  about  doing  something  he's  never  even  considered  doing 

. .    going  underground.   

He  wants  to  know   . . .   if  there  are  dead  bodies  in  this  place 

   He  stays  close  to  us  repeating   . . 

" I'm  a  little  nervous   . .   I  don't  know  what's  going  to  happen  in  there  . .  

I  just  have  to  give  it  a  try,   I think. "

Part  of  the  fun  in  caves  is  looking  for   SHAPES   that  resemble  something  else.                            

Here  we  are  amused  by  this  giant  elephant   . .   body  parts  extend  to  the  right  . .      

seen  only  with  the  help  of  guide's  flashlight.                 

                        

This  cave  is   DARKER   than  most   . . 

We  feel  our  way   .   listen  for  voices.   

In  order  to  show  photos  I've  increased  exposure 

                       

Lots  of  stooping over   .   Hats  bumping  overhead   .    Stepping  distances  crouched  down

           

By  tomorrow  we  feel  it  on  the  top  of  our  upper  thighs

                            

Jeff   keeps  saying  . . 

" I  hardly  believe  this !      I  am  loving  doing  this  cave  stuff.   

    I  never  knew  about  these  places  . . "

                                                 

Once  we  exit  . .  we  are  going  to  turn  left 

to  follow  the  path  overseeing  the  Valley  called    . .   " the  Cradle  of  Humankind " 

. .   where  the  famous  skull  of    " Mrs.  Ples "   was  found 

. .   dated   3.5  million  years  old   . .   ( shown  in  SA 4 ).

Rusty  and  Wrinkles  are  sort  of  caveaholics   . .   There's  a  uniqueness  about  each cave

This  one  we  notice  involves  getting  through  many   tight  places   bent  over  . . 

And  it  has  a  nice  sized  LAKE   at  the  bottom   . .   filled  with   ' blind '  SHRIMP                       and  a  limestone  toothpaste - textured  appearance  above  . .  reflected  in  the  water

                                                    

Jeff  stares  at  the  grassy  field  on  top  . .  and  marvels  at  his  discovery  today 

. .  about  " all  these  things  I  didn't  know  were  down  there " . .   It's  a  touching  moment.   

( We've  hired  him  as  our  driver  and  are  bringing  him  with  us 

as  we  see  sites  in  this   Jo'burg - Pretoria   part  of   South  Africa.)

SA 02 - Sharing Ride to SWAZILAND

One  thing  leads  to  another  in  conversation

Long  story  short  . .  we  ride  along  with  Ugandan  "Francis"  &  his  Ugandan  friend  "Jeff "

from   Blue  Mango  Lodge  in   Jo'burg   to  . .   SWAZILAND

    

                

Francis  had  lived  in  Swaziland  with  his  family  for  12 years  . .  teaching  business  classes  . . 

plus  serving  as  an  unsalaried  minister  of  Vision  International  Church  of  God

  

Born  near  the  Kenya  border  he  speaks  highly  of  his  wife  (Grace)  of  about  25  years  . . . 

. .  saying  Ugandan  women  are  good  and  loyal  supporters  in  marriage  . .  

They  have  one  son  (Andrew)  in  college,   one  son  (Justin)  finishing  high  school 

and  one  daughter  (Destiny)  in  grade  school

                                   

Jeff  did  the  transporting  of  the  people  attending  Francis's  seminar 

. .   We  together  share  expenses  round  trip  to  Swaziland.  

Jeff  proves  to  be  not  only  a  careful  driver  but  also  extremely  helpful  and  friendly 

. .   honest  and  fair.        We  appreciate  his  common  sense

The  reason  for  the  trip 

is  to  pick  up  a  few  more  of  the  things  Francis  is  storing  with  friends  . .

                  since  he  moved  back  to  Uganda  about  10  months  ago.   

All  furniture  and  large  items  were  sold  before  the  family  flew  north.   

He  will  fly  home  to  Uganda  on  RuandAir  which  unfortunately  charges  more  per  checked  bag.  

( On  being  back  in  Uganda ) . . 

Francis  says  he  had  not  appreciated  his  own  country  . .  until  living  away  from  there 

. . .  or  how  (willingly)  hard  Ugandan  people  work  . . 

"Ugandans  are  very  ambitious" . .  he  emphasizes  with  a  smile  of  admiration

   

While  in  Swaziland    (a  country  within  the  country  of   South Africa)  . .

He  shows  us  the  Conference  Center  for  important  local  and  international  affairs   . . 

situated  high  in  the  wooded  hills.

And  he  shares  tales  about  the  

Head  of  State   here  who  became  KING   as  a  young  boy.   

He  had  been  sent  to  London  to  be  educated.       At  the  time  of  his  father's  death   . .

this   10th  grader  left  school

to  replace  his  father  as  KING 

 . .   and  until  today  in  his  40's

he  has  enjoyed  taking  another  new  wife  each  year  . . .   ( at  one  of  two  annual  national  events ) 

He  has  enjoyed  international  travel  at  the  expense  of  his  impoverished  citizens   . . 

and  has  no  knowledge  or  experience  . .  then  or  now  . .  regarding  the  important  topics  of 

Jobs   .    Education   .   Disease   .   Infrastructure   .   or   .   Leadership   in  general

    Since  Apartheid  ended  and  world  monies  stopped  pouring  in  by  the  "b" . .  billions  . . 

    every  measure  of  living  standards  has  plummeted.   

    AIDS  is  rampant  . .   very  few  attend  school  and  even  fewer  . .  graduate.   

    Lifespan  is  cut  in  half   .   The  future  is  grim   .   but  the  King  is  still  having   fun !!

  

We  return  to  the   Swazi  border   about  6 a.m.     Border  closed  . .  until  7.

Morning  air  is  cool  and  fresh  with  bright  blue  sky.      We  listen  to  more  stories.

Francis  has  a  good  head  on  his  shoulders  . .  tells  it  like  it  is.      He's  realistic  . .

and  hopeful  that  eventually  people  here  will  learn  . .   that  there  are  better  ways  to  live.

They  are   subject  to  the   king   . .

Males    are  taught  to   submit  to  him  in  fear

Women    are  the  work  horses  of  the  country

                   

Small  Fruit Stalls   gradually  open  up  along  the  road  at  the  Border  at  this  early  hour.   

Eventually  women  and  young  girls  arrive  dressed  for  church  . . 

to  be  held  in  a  building  on  the  other  side  of  the  Gate

                                                  Ezulwini Valley    is  the   'Go  To'   location  :

 between  the   Capital, Mbabane,   and  the  more  active  town  called  Manzini.

IN  THAT  STRIP    are  the   king's  palace 

and  the 

Setting  where  the . .  2  big  events  of  the  year   . .   take  place : 

◉     One   to  Teach  Males   ' SUBMISSION '   ( to  the  "KING" )

◉    One  where  newest  young  female  (even 10 -12 years old)  is  chosen  . .  as  king's  newest  wife

                

Swaziland   . .   is  uniquely  Mountainous   .   very  Picturesque   .   lots  of  Valleys   .   lush  Green

" Swazi "  people    . .    are    . .    ZULUS   who  escaped  Torture  and  Death 

. . .   by  the  Dutch    .    the  British   .    and  the  rest  of  the  Zulus  themselves.

       

    The  MILES  between  . .   Swaziland  ( country )   . .   and  Johannesburg   ( city  in  South  Africa ) 

           . .   are  filled  with  rolling  hills  and  flatlands  covered  with  plantings  of    EVERGREENS

           . .   thousands  of  acres  . .   harvested  for   PAPER  products   and   building  materials 

                                         

. . .   And  enormous   CORN  FIELDS   stretching  out   for  miles  and  miles   . . .

                             

Our  delay  in  getting  going  with  the  blog  stories  involved  network  issues 

. . .  ( solved  with  a  local  Sim  Card ) . . . plus  a  jam - packed  week.

We  arrive  at  the    Johannesburg   Airport   . . .   January  1,  2015   . . .   6:30  a.m. 

on  British Air  via  Heathrow London  . . .  after  more  than  48  sleepless  hours

                                                        

1st  order  of  business  after  checking  in  at 

Blue  Mango  Lodge   in   Kempton Park  -  (Pomona)   is  to  get  some  rest.  

Twelve  hours  later  we  wake  up  at  11 p.m.     

..  not exactly the best way to get our body clocks turned around  ..

( Back to sleep  2  hours later  . .  By morning we're  ready - to - go )

. . . Jo'burg  is  2 hours  ahead  of  London,  so  about  9  hours  ahead of  our  U.S.  home

                                                         

We  don't  usually  show  bathrooms  but  . . 

Brit owner,  Stevie,  and  his  Ugandan  wife  Daisy  . .  

have  put  a  lot  of  thought  and  care  into  this  property  . .  beginning  with  a  very  tiny  house   

                                                   

Stevie  himself  cooks  Dinner  out  here  on  the  'braai' 

. . .  Breakfast  is  included   . . .   Supper  is  $12

                                               

 Our  room  is  on  the  back  side  of  this  expanded  home 

 . .   Several  cottages,  not  shown,  are  added  to  the  right  of  this  view 

 . .   plus  he  has  purchased  many  nearby  houses  to  offer  for  long - term  rent.  

 He  explains  that  non - South Africans  have  a  very  difficult  time  finding  employment 

 . .  so  they  tend  to  invent  independent  ways  to  make  a  living

                               

At  breakfast  we  talk  at  length  with     Francis  from  Uganda    . .  who  has 

come  to  lead  a  2 - week  business  seminar  attended  this  time  mainly  by  Tanzanians.

As  it  turns  out  we  spend  most  of  the  day  listening  right  in  this  room 

Stevie  comes  in  and  we  ask  questions  for  hours   . .   about  "southern"  Africa

about   South  Africa's   relationship  to  it's  neighbors   . . 

about   post - Apartheid  adjustments   . .

about   Africa's  natural  resources    . . 

about   the  historical  backdrop  . . 

( in  the  'southern'  portion  of  the  continent  compared to  other  countries  further  'north' )   

He  is  overflowing  with  stories  and  opinions  . . 

Including   roles  played  in  the  past  by   the  Dutch  and  the  English  in  particular  . . 

&   Missionaries   .    Colonists   .    Investors    

Slave Trade   .   Mining   .   Drugs   .  Import - Export    issues

An  important  'Page One'   . .   in  our  heads   . .   as  we  sort  through  many  decades  of  topics 

that  have  dominated  news  headlines  . .   during  our  lifetime  . .   and  centuries  earlier

 

                                                 

By  evening  some  important  decisions  have  been  made.   

Life  is  really  interesting  . .  isn't  it ?
