GDL . . in the title (above) is simply Germany Deutch Land
(for lack of another idea right now)
_____
MUNICH
conjures up many images
NAZI Concentration CAMPS
CAR manufacturing plants
CATHOLIC "Counter - Reformation" images
COLD WAR reminders
Christmas Markets
Cuckoo Clocks
Chocolates
UNBELIEVABLE . . numbers of Cases of BEER
and of course
PRETZELS (plate-sized)
+
__________
Of the 1300 Breweries in Germany
Munich does their share keeping those employed busy.
It happens to still be . .
OKTOBER FEST
never mind that it's . . September
and the FEST will END October 3 this year
(a "Tuesday" . . usually it ends the 1st Sunday in October)
"September . . has better weather" they say)
Prices go "wherever" they choose
during this world-drawing event
So we decide to get a place in Augsburg (and commute).
The State of Bavaria offers a "DEAL" on Transportation
called the
BAYERN TICKET
★ . . 24 Euro 1st person and 4 Euro each for up to 4 more people traveling together
(+ 2 euro if you buy it at a Counter instead of a machine . . Counter service includes 'advice' regarding 'Options' and a printout of potential 'choices' of trains to take that day)
(+ 2 euro if you buy it at a Counter instead of a machine . . Counter service includes 'advice' regarding 'Options' and a printout of potential 'choices' of trains to take that day)
. . after 9 a.m.
. . on Regional trains (not the speedy ICE trains)
. . good ALL DAY until last train that night
. . anywhere in ALL of BAVARIA
. . one-way OR round-trip
. . between towns
. . including all city buses, trams, subways etc.
➤ (It's really nice NOT to have to be buying tickets constantly)
This Bayern Ticket UN-complicates getting to major sites outside of
the Munich Central Zone
to Concentration Camps
even qualifies getting TO . . IN and AROUND Salzburg, Austria
(since it's right on the German border)
_____
We've arrived . .
Had dinner here on Tuesday . . the final day of Oktoberfest.
The Menu is more extensive than you might expect
Cover looks like holiday celebration
We choose "Roasted Knuckle of Pork" with gravy and Potato Dumpling
plus Cabbage Salad with Bacon
and Apple Strudel with Vanilla Sauce
The history of the place is interesting . .
We were here in the late '80s.
At that time this hall was one giant open space
They have now added partial walls here and there maybe to cozy up the seating somewhat
even though no matter where you sit you feel part of the atmosphere.
There's also outdoor seating (too chilly right now)
and we could see upper level veranda-like spots to hang out . . while still enjoying the music.
Would be interesting to know how many countries are represented in ONE years' Oktoberfest . .
Meanwhile . . the Band plays on . .
And these huge steins are emptied and re-ordered . .
All businesses that serve BEER are required to offer FREE toilets to the Public.
That's handy to know for all Visitors (in Munich). .
because PAY toilets can range in price from .50 to 2.00 !
Showing a variety of seating areas
The noise VOLUME in here is . . 'way up there'
Somehow conversation goes on . .
Bavarian locals are easy to spot . .
and they seem to be honored to be asked to pose for a pic
These last several photos (above & below) are from Friday following Tuesday's end of Oktoberfest.
Some Bavarians (like these) are not quite ready to let go of the holiday mood
Maybe they're here every Friday . .
Lederhosen and "Leder" (leather) shops are all over the place
as are dirndl shirts and aprons for the gals (even . . baby clothes)
(worn with "jeans jackets" and tennis shoes)
Of course, the souvenir shop inside has it "all"
As we head out . . more are arriving . . full dress . . loving "the whole thing"
Right in front . . more music
And a group of grade schoolers wearing their Soccer / Futbol (sp?) garb
They want to know our name and where we live.
They leave "tomorrow" from Germany to compete against 11 other teams in SPAIN.
And that is just one of many topics that occupied our days in "greater" Munich
Feels 'wintery' . . we've added layers
And there are drizzles, showers, and occasional downpours
More to come.
