At  Port  Elizabeth  . .  we've  driven  as  far  'EAST'  as  we're  going  to  go  . . 

( Distance  from PE  to  Durban  . .  further  East  . .  offers  NO  Coastal  Route  &  little  to  see / do ).     

So  . .  it's  time  to  return  to  George  . .  leave   the  CAPE   Garden  Route  and  . . 

move   North   into   the  . .  Little  Karoo 

. .  where  we  join   South  Africa's  version  of  U.S.  Route  66   ( here . . . Route 62 ) 

. .  following  the  "World's  Longest  Wine  Route"   ( back  into  Cape Town ! )

CANGO  CAVES  . .  are  named  after  the  Khoisan  word  for  a  . .  "WET   PLACE" 

. .  less  than  20  Miles  North  of  Oudtshoorn  . .

ACIDIC   Ground  Water    ( 20  Million  years  ago ) 

. .  began  eroding  the  . .  100  Million  year  old  . .  Limestone.

The   90  Minute  Tour  goes  through  several  tight - Tunnels  and  climb - through - Holes 

. .  So  we  opt  for  the  first  60  Minute  Scenic  section  . .

. .  We're  ASKING  . .  "Have  we  ever  seen  a  Cave  more  beautiful ?"     

It  took  an  incomprehensible  length  of  Time  . .  but  the  Result  . .  is  like 

. .   standing   in the  middle  of   a  gigantic  piece  of   Sculpture !!

Architecturally  . .  UN - copy - able  . .

CANGO  Caves   are  now  on  the  . .  IN - active   List  . .  No  activity  for  hundreds  of years

Several  years  ago  . .  one  'Room'  was  Ground - Surfaced  . .  &  used  for  Public  Concerts

Unfortunately . .  there's  always  someone  who  wanders  away 

. .  and  chooses  to ' break  off '  a  souvenir  or  two 

. .   bringing  an  end  to  public  enjoyment  in  that  unique  setting

Smaller  Areas  . .  are   . .    PURE   MAGIC 

. .   like    DRAPERY   . .

. .    a     Masterpiece   . .
