. . .   That's  how  long    S A L T    has  been mined here  in  Krakow,  Poland !

At  one  point  . .  in  the  history  of  this  mine  . . 

SALT   brought   in 

1/3   . .   of   Poland's   income

There  are  . .  200   miles  of  Chambers 

. .   supported  by  . .  WOOD  . .  because  . .  metal . .  rusts

Altogether  . .   downward   . .   there  are   800  steps
. .  beginning  with  the  first  spiral  of  . .  380

Long  work  hours   

arriving  before  sunrise   .   leaving  in  darkness  as  well

 Miners  entertain  themselves 

 then  and  now 

. .  by  Sculpting  things  from  the  SALT 

     

In  we  go . . .

 400  miners   are    still  employed  here  

. .  "maintaining"   all  Chambers

         

Lots  of  buzz  at  first  about  the  380 +   (count 'em)  . .   steps   'd o w n' . .

They  didn't  tell  us 

it  would  actually  be  more  than   double   that  many  . .

One  area  is  open  wide  enough  for

A  small  Lake 

. . .  The  mine  had  to  be  Closed  in  1996 

because 

workers  unintentionally  broke  a  barrier 

 that  now  let's  water  in 

from 

above  ground

We're  not  clear  about  whether  that  harms  the  product 

or  puts  the  worker  in  danger  or  what  . . . 

At  this  point  . .  We  climb  only  a  few  stairs  UP  . . 

We  divide  up  into  groups  of  approximately   8  to  10  

and  squeeze  into 

tiny  old  wire  basket - like  industrial  'lifts'  . .  and  zoom  to  the  top

So  many  interesting  things  in  Kraków  . .  Hang  in  there  . .
